RUTO Endangering Our Children’s Future with CBC – NATEMBEYA Challenges Parents to Question New Education System
Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has criticized President William Ruto’s government for threatening the future of children through the competency-based curriculum (CBC).
In remarks made following the announcement of the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results, Natembeya condemned the new curriculum, labeling it a looming disaster.
He pointed out a widespread misunderstanding of the system among education stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and the Ministry of Education.
“I do not comprehend CBC myself. I have inquired with teachers, and they too struggle to grasp it. Parents, the ministry, and even the president, who has established a task force, are perplexed by CBC. We are jeopardizing our children’s future,” he remarked.
“Dear Kenyans, we need to have an honest dialogue about the CBC system. Are we genuinely equipping our children for the future, or are we endangering it? It’s time for reflectionour children deserve more. ”
In October 2024, Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma recommended reinstating the 8-4-4 education system in Kenya to replace the recently adopted competency-based curriculum (CBC).
In a statement dated October 23, 2024, Kaluma expressed that the country lacks adequate facilities and resources to effectively implement the CBC system.
He asserted that students enrolled in the CBC have not been receiving proper education since its inception in 2017.
According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), a competency-based curriculum emphasizes the actions learners are expected to perform rather than solely what they should know.
UNESCO previously criticized the 8-4-4 system as excessively rigid, limiting opportunities for aligning basic education with children’s career aspirations, aptitudes, and abilities.
