Allies of President William Ruto have issued a strong warning to former President Uhuru Kenyatta, threatening to cut down his retirement benefits over his mounting criticism of the government.
The lawmakers, who have rallied behind Ruto’s administration, say Kenyatta’s recent remarks and perceived involvement in opposition politics could not go unchallenged. They argue that a retired head of state cannot enjoy state-funded privileges while simultaneously undermining the government in power.
Speaking during a heated political gathering, the MPs insisted that if Uhuru continues to attack the Ruto administration, Parliament will move swiftly to review and slash his perks. These include state-funded allowances, vehicles, staff, and security details.
“We cannot allow taxpayers’ money to be used to sponsor someone who is working day and night to weaken the government,” one of the legislators declared.
The threat marks an escalation in the already sour relationship between the former allies, which began unraveling in the run-up to the 2022 general election. Uhuru has in recent weeks openly criticized Ruto’s handling of key issues, including the economy, governance, and the controversial housing levy.
Analysts warn that the move to target Uhuru’s perks could fuel a deeper political rift and possibly ignite a constitutional debate on the rights and entitlements of former presidents.
The Retirement Benefits Act entitles former heads of state to lifelong perks, provided they refrain from engaging in active politics. Ruto’s allies argue that Uhuru has crossed that line and must face the consequences.
This latest clash underscores the heightened political temperatures in Kenya as the country edges closer to the 2027 polls, with Uhuru’s influence in Mount Kenya and opposition politics remaining a key concern for the ruling coalition.
