Power Games Exposed: Leaders Accused of Hijacking State House Meeting to Target Natembeya

The political scene has experienced a considerable shift with the news of a Trans Nzoia County Assembly member’s strong rejection of the rumors circulating about the legislature’s plan to impeach the governor, George Natembeya, which, on the other hand, has intensified the scrutiny of the current leadership, and the overall political environment in Western Kenya has already been tumultuous.

On Monday, January 5, Kutilila, the MCA for Sikhendu Ward, expressed very clearly that he had no doubt the rumors about the impeachment of Governor Natembeya were not true.

Kutilila believed that the political characters who were making such statements were doing so for political gain, and in this case, the gain would be by making unfounded claims that MCAs were plotting the removal of the governor.

He also pinpointed the Kiminini MP Kakai Bisau and the senator Allan Chesang and, among other things, asserted that they had taken advantage of the recent meeting with President William Ruto in order to generate impeachment talk where there was none.

Kutilila maintained that the president’s purpose for calling the meeting was to determine Trans Nzoia’s development priorities. Kutilila, however, accused Bisau and Chesang of diverting the agenda to criticize the governor’s leadership.

Kutilila could not make it more clear when he said, “There are no plans by MCAs to impeach Natembeya,” thereby relegating the speculation, which is both online and political, to mere chatter. He called on the critics to shift their focus to the empowering development issues that directly affect their constituents rather than to the divisive political narratives that keep on being fueled.

The denial surfaces amid the continuous criticism of the governor by some national and regional leaders who have publicly voiced their disapproval of Natembeya’s administration.

Among the critics, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has been the most aggressive with his call for the governor’s impeachment, citing misconduct, tribalism, and bad governance—accusations that have exacerbated the political divisions in the area.

Political experts think that the impeachment talk could be a part of the wider strategic planning since the 2027 general elections are approaching, as various political players are putting themselves in the right position. In the midst of these conflicts, Kutilila’s comment is the strongest statement so far rejecting the impeachment plots directed at the governor of Trans Nzoia.

The supporters of Governor Natembeya have received the explanation with open arms, presenting it as a significant victory against what they consider to be groundless political assaults and renewing his mandate as demarcated by the voters.
