A new political tempest has blown in Kenya’s opposition after the Kileleshwa Ward representative Robert Alai laid the charge of secretly rallying up the senior members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to do election support for the Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, the senator of Homa Bay being the prime accused.
Alai disregarded the step as “acts of futility,” which led to bitter altercations and revealed the coalition of ODM is getting more divided.
The very next day, Wednesday, January 7, 2023, the outspoken Alai made his allegations against Moses Kajwang’. He is always fighting for and defending the Wiper Party leader and the 2027 elections in that place, at least through Jeremiah Kilonzo, who will be supporting him and voting for him and looks up to him.
The statement, which gave birth to a political wrestle between the two, touched on many things, including the fact that the senator has never won an election through the long-standing Odinga’s support, and now he is going even deeper into the politically reckless territory.
Alai has directly told the rumor of a big ODM leader moving towards the Wiper camp by Moses Kajwang’ who is “just a campaign trader,” getting Oburu (Raila’s brother) to Kalonzo Musyoka. Besides, Alai called on Kajwang’ to give up what he termed as a senseless mission and not to mix in the party politics, which he labeled a political fantasy.
Kajwang’ did not take long before he shot back with a countercharge that was cutting and questioned Alai’s intelligence in a short and bitter social media post, thus escalating the public spats. The whole scenario has left no doubt about ODM’s internal problems, especially at this particular time when political alliances are still being formed across the country.
The principal cause of the contention lies in Kajwang’s taking up the legal battle of the ex-president Uhuru Kenyatta, who, according to some members of ODM, has meddled in the party affairs.
Declaring that unity and cooperation with what he referred to as “all progressive parties” in the realization of common national objectives would be a better way of the future, Kajwang’ has urged the members of the party not to alter the historical narrative nor to reinterpret the past relationships for the sake of facilitating the present-day political scenario.
