In an already crowded 2027 presidential election in Kenya, Miguna Miguna, a lawyer and political activist who is controversial, has announced his aim to run for president. The vetting had gone through a process where the candidates were selected, and the announcement was made by the lawyer, Miguna, during a live TV interview Wednesday night.
His campaign is going to be about public interest versus elitism, moving towards a people-centered approach with a radical vision for the country’s governance.
Miguna positioned himself as a disruptor with the aim of pulling down the old political classes and coming up with new ones. He stated, “I am going to vie for the presidency of the Republic of Kenya in 2027.”
He was very sure that he would win and that the country’s political system would change with the proposed rearing up of integrity and socialism as the foundation of governance. The prevailing political economics of capitalism and patronage will be cut off from us, in contrast to the current narrative.
Miguna’s announcement took him to the battlefield that is the dagger and the sharpening stone in front of him. His foray into the ‘sifted’ ground marked the start of challenge and war in the cutting-edge field that comprises the figureheads of the establishment, the vote-saviors, and perennials such as Fred Matiang’i, Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, David Maraga, and Boniface Mwangi, who are all in the process of stumbling upon President William Ruto’s power.
The developments on the political front have been very demanding for Miguna. He was expelled from the country in 2018 and was confined to a no-entry zone for almost five years, and during those times he has become a real nightmare for the government in the eyes of the world, being that he was able to keep the whole saga in courts, international media, and diplomatic channels.
His return was made possible by the present ruling party, yet he has always been portraying the regime as giving frustrations by its systemic injustices and power abuses.
Miguna made clear in his announcement that he cannot but believe that the political system in Kenya not only requires a total and radical change, but also that he is the one to facilitate this change.
He has confronted the power brokers who have long established themselves in their positions and criticized the candidates for breaking ranks with the popular forces who, in his view, have been the establishment. Over time, his conquering discourse has become the voice of the part of the electorate that is tired of the status quo characterized by inequality, corruption, and stagnation.
However, political analysts are of the opinion that the move by Miguna could go as far as breaking the opposition coalitions or drawing support from other anti-establishment candidates, thus changing the course of the campaign and voter alignments as the elections draw nearer.
His entry into the initial round of voting brings along the speculation of uncertainty and possible run-offs being a feature in the 2027 elections, since voter intentions and alliances are still not clear.
As the presidential campaign trail for Miguna begins, the following months will be a period of great political maneuvering, public debates, and a redefinition of the prevailing conditions in the country’s economy and governance in terms of who will be the next leader.
