Chapter 3: The Stranger’s Truth
In a space filled with gentle music and quiet conversation Elena’s hands shook as she looked across the table at Nathan Blackwood. Up close he was even more striking tall and at peace yet in his eyes was a storm which promised trouble.
In dim light his features cast sharp shadows which in turn made his intense look even more haunting. Why did you present me that rose? Elena’s voice was even which is to say calm but as for her heart it was thudding against her ribs. Nathan leaned back, crossed his arms.
“Because I knew you would. Had to. “That’s not an answer.” He smiled a little, that which was of sorrow also. “You are that which I lost. Silence fell between them. He said after a pause, “That which was her name is Livia. Also she was it sounds strange to say it out loud everything. And then one night she was gone.
No trace. No goodbye. Only a rose left on her windowsill which I sent you. Elena’s heart went out. “And you think I am related to her? I don’t know. I do, that’s for sure. The necklace which you see Livia had the same one. That is no coincidence.

Elena in a fit of instinct went to her throat. She had had the heirloom pendant given to her by her grandmother which until that point she had never questioned the origin of. “I don’t understand…” she began. Nathan leaned in. “I will show you. But if you go with me there’s no going back. You’ll be drawn into something dark. something which is already watching you.
A shiver ran down Elena’s spine. Outside, lightning split the sky. And on the periphery of the street, a man in a black coat was their watchful eye behind a flickering streetlight. Face may be hidden but his presence is felt. Elena looked at Nathan then out the window, then back. Why does it feel like my life is no longer my own? Nathan got up.
“Because it didn’t stop. It only began. He offered his hand. Hesitation and curiosity fought it out, fear throbbed with the beat of what was certain. Elena took a deep breath. …and slipped her hand into his. Whatever was to come, it had already started.
