Khalwale Explodes After De-Whipping: Senator Reveals What Really Cost Him Ruto’s Senate Job

In a shocking turn of events that has greatly impacted the political atmosphere in Kenya, Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has exposed the real motivation behind his sudden dismissal as the Senate Majority Whip by the group of President William Ruto.

Khalwale’s story illustrates the ruling coalition’s internal conflicts, and it also indicates the increasing tensions as Kenya approaches the general elections in 2027.

Khalwale, at a news conference in Kakamega County, characterized his de-whipping as not a customary disciplinary action but rather a culmination of a growing political divide between him and the top brass of the Kenya Kwanza alliance.

According to the senator, his recent behavior—among them public vilification of some party decisions and open backing of accountability—was considered to be a sign of rebellion and disloyalty. Khalwale was not hesitant in naming the cause for his dismissal as a “fundamental disagreement” with the president’s tone and choice of policies.

He maintained that, contrary to previous explanations that depicted his de-whipping as resulting from procedural errors, the issue was really a political one—stemming from his unwillingness to follow the coalition’s official standpoint on major legislative issues.

He pointed out, in particular, the disagreement over the management of in-house party elections and the lack of communication on critical policy decisions with Western Kenya as major issues.

Khalwale claimed that a lot of his views were inspired by the community’s needs rather than personal aspirations, and, therefore, he saw himself as a representative of his people rather than a party loyalist in the hierarchy.

Khalwale, in his forthright judgment, attributed a lack of respect for opposing views to certain Kenya Kwanza leaders and claimed his call for transparency and democracy in the party was met with resentment.

“If you tell the powerful the truth, they will interpret your position as one of disloyalty,” he stated, adding that his critics viewed his demand for accountability as an attempt to weaken the coalition.

The statements of the senator align with the general trend of the ruling coalition increasingly divided by faction—indeed, in recent months, other leaders have also made hints concerning internal disagreements about tactical and leadership issues coming up to the 2027 elections.

Political analysts are of the opinion that Khalwale’s removal from the party and his later disclosures signify a deepening fracture in the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

A section of the analysts sees the leadership’s move as one to tighten control and get rid of those with unpredictable or independent views.

Conversely, the other analysts consider the action to be a signal of the cross-cutting issue for political alliances: how to allow internal criticism without sacrificing public unity.

“Khalwale’s ousting is a signal to the other party members: no dissent will be allowed,” one political analyst stated. “On the other hand, it also shows that the coalition is having a hard time keeping its members together at a crucial time.”
