In a move that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has announced that former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i is the party’s chosen candidate for the 2027 presidential race. The revelation has left many questioning whether Matiang’i is the opposition’s ultimate wildcard or just another player in Kenya’s high-stakes political game.
Matiang’i’s Presidential Bid: A Calculated Move or a Political Gamble?
Speaking to a local media outlet on March 24, 2025, Kioni disclosed that Matiang’i himself expressed interest in the presidency, prompting the party to throw its weight behind him.
“He made his intentions clear, and as a party, it’s our duty to rally behind our candidate and push his agenda nationwide,” Kioni declared.

The Jubilee Party boss stressed that having a presidential flagbearer is crucial for a party of their stature, dismissing any notion of operating without a strong candidate.
“A major party like Jubilee cannot afford to sit on the sidelines. Leadership is about taking charge, and when capable leaders step up, they must be given the platform to lead,” he added.
Matiang’i’s Next Move: A Nation Holds Its Breath
Kioni hinted that Matiang’i himself will soon make a public declaration about his candidacy, fueling speculation that the former CS is gearing up for a political showdown.
“Matiang’i came to us first, and he will address the nation in due time. The wait won’t be long. When the moment is right, he will clear the air,” Kioni assured.
Opposition Power Struggle: Will Matiang’i Unite or Divide?
However, Kioni was quick to shut down claims that Matiang’i’s endorsement by Jubilee automatically makes him the de facto opposition candidate.
“We are not saying that his nomination by Jubilee means he is the unanimous choice of the entire opposition. The fight against the Kenya Kwanza-ODM government requires a united front,” Kioni explained, signaling ongoing talks with other political heavyweights.
Behind the scenes, opposition forces are reportedly scrambling to form a formidable alliance, with insiders hinting that Matiang’i might be part of a grander scheme to shake up Kenya’s political order.
Why Matiang’i? Jubilee Reveals Their Masterplan
Kioni justified Jubilee’s backing of Matiang’i by pointing to his impressive track record in governance, particularly in spearheading reforms in the education sector.
He also suggested that Matiang’i is the only leader capable of resurrecting key national programs, including Huduma Namba, NHIF reforms, and university funding initiatives.
“Fred Matiang’i is our candidate. He is the only leader with the vision and capacity to restore Huduma Namba, revamp NHIF, and secure funding for higher education institutions,” Kioni proclaimed during a TV interview.
Is Kenya Ready for a Matiang’i Presidency?
With Jubilee placing its bets on Matiang’i’s ability to challenge the status quo, the question now is—will he emerge as the opposition’s rallying point, or will internal divisions shatter his presidential ambitions before they even take off? The political battlefield is set, and the stakes have never been higher.
