“I Am Not Safe” – Gachagua Explodes After Sudden Withdrawal of Protection

In a shocking and urgent political move, the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that his life is in danger after the government suddenly took away his state security detail.

This has deepened the already strained relationship with President William Ruto’s government. Gachagua revealed this in an interview with K24 on Monday, January 12, and argued that he is not only a political but also a security risk in the country.

Gachagua, who has taken over the leadership of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), characterized the pulling back of his security as a rash move. He contended that his history in public service and the large number of people who support him throughout the country are solid grounds for continued protection.

“I want to inform the citizens of Kenya that Rigathi Gachagua is in trouble,” he stated, presenting the government’s action as an obvious danger to his life and a threat to his political career.

The ex-vice president openly connected the removal of security with his political differences with President Ruto, asserting that the step is a part of what he referred to as a government-instigated campaign against him to diminish his stature, especially in the Mount Kenya area, which is very significant politically.

According to Gachagua, his enemies are determined to remove him from the elections by putting him in danger of being unprotected while he is still a political actor.

The assertion made by Gachagua is the result of his continuous clashes with government officials; among these confrontations is last week’s shocking episode that involved the use of teargas at a church service in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, where the congregation was said to have been affected during an event that was connected to the vice president.

He openly accused the security forces that are sympathetic to the administration of the excessive use of force, thus escalating the already existing conflict.

Political experts express the fear that the echo of Gachagua’s accusations could only serve to divide the political factions in Kenya even more if the storyline of a proactive opposition leader starts to get popular among his followers.

The government has chosen not to issue any formal statement in reply to Gachagua’s claims, nor has it provided any explanation as to the withdrawal of his security. It seems like the unfolding of the controversy will be the main trigger for public discourse on state motives and political intimidation in the run-up to the national election.
