Gachagua Issues Warning to Ruto on Mungiki Strategy

Gachagua cautions Ruto against using Mungiki to coerce Mt. Kenya – Consequences may be severe

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has cautioned President William Ruto to refrain from pressuring the Mt. Kenya electorate to support him.

In a statement yesterday, Gachagua accused Ruto of employing tactics reminiscent of the late Daniel Moi’s administration to suppress dissenting communities and coerce their allegiance.

He asserted that the Moi regime resorted to a notorious gang to instill fear in the region.

Gachagua indicated that a similar group is currently attempting to impose the government’s will and policies on a disillusioned Mount Kenya electorate.

He appeared to reference the return of Maina Njenga to Mt. Kenya politics, following reports that Ruto had engaged Njenga to sway the region’s support for his administration.

However, Gachagua urged Ruto to reconsider such strategies, warning they could be counterproductive.

“History is repeating itself; when the people of this region began to resist, a criminal entity was created to punish them for opposing poor governance. “

“The leader of that entity was recently present here. This gang systematically targeted the population, resorting to beheadings and exploiting our people, resulting in chaos,” Gachagua stated.

The former deputy president asserted that the government is uneasy with the public growing aware of its failures.

He claimed that the concept of using gangs has been devised to instill fear in citizens and deter them from voicing their concerns to those in power.

Gachagua maintained that this gang has government support and is actively disrupting life across Mt. Kenya.

He noted that law enforcement had been instructed to remain passive as this group conducted its operations.
