Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has fiercely defended Kenya’s security forces against mounting criticism, accusing the media and social media users of unfairly attacking law enforcement without understanding the challenges they face.

Speaking at the National Police Service Development Partners Roundtable at the Kenya School of Government, Murkomen expressed outrage at being labeled a “Below Average CS” by The Standard Newspaper. He called out journalists and bloggers, daring them to spend time in volatile regions like Elwak to witness firsthand the harsh realities officers endure.

“It’s easy for people to sit behind computers and criticize our police. I see it all the time. I challenge these journalists to step out of Nairobi—I’ll even provide free transport—and spend a week at an operational base in a dangerous zone,” he declared.

His remarks follow a disturbing rise in insecurity, with recent terror attacks in Garissa and Mandera claiming multiple officers’ lives. Suspected Al-Shabaab militants ambushed a police reservist camp, killing six officers, while another officer was killed in Mandera by alleged Somali intelligence agents in a retaliatory strike.

As fears grow over Kenya’s deteriorating security, Murkomen insists the media must stop demonizing law enforcement and acknowledge their sacrifices.
