“Choir of Praise Singers” — Bishop Tears Into Luo Cabinet Secretaries, Says Region Still Suffering.

A fresh wave of political tension has erupted in Nyanza after a senior Anglican cleric delivered a blistering rebuke of top Luo leaders serving in President William Ruto’s administration, accusing them of misleading their community and failing to deliver meaningful development.

Speaking during a funeral service at ACK St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Kisumu, Bishop Charles Ong’injo of the Anglican Church of Kenya’s Maseno South Diocese took direct aim at Cabinet Secretaries from the region, arguing that their celebratory rhetoric over government inclusion has not translated into real benefit for the Luo community.

Bishop Ong’injo accused the leaders of prioritizing political survival over public service, branding them a “choir and a chorus” that sings praises to power instead of tackling the harsh economic realities affecting ordinary citizens.

He lamented that while the officials boast of access to government, the region continues to face rising poverty, unemployment and stalled development. In a rare and sharply critical sermon, the bishop also took direct aim at the Kenya Kwanza administration, describing it as “one of the most repressive regimes in modern Kenya.”

He cited abductions, economic strain, and what he called symbolic displays of state power — including grand state funerals — that do little to address widespread public suffering. Ong’injo further questioned the legitimacy of past electoral outcomes, reigniting long-standing grievances and sentiments of political marginalization in Nyanza.

His remarks triggered murmurs among mourners, some applauding his boldness while others appeared stunned by the unusually candid attack from the pulpit. The comments underscore deepened political unease in the region, which has historically been aligned with the opposition.

The criticism also signals growing frustration among religious leaders over escalating living costs and perceived government intimidation amid increasing public disillusionment.

The remarks are likely to spark a new round of political debate as the country continues to wrestle with soaring prices, rising debt, and widening public mistrust in both political and institutional leadership. Government representatives from the region had not issued a response by the time of publication.
