A horrifying accident rocked Ng’iya Center on the Siaya-Kisumu highway early Friday, April 25, claiming two lives and leaving dozens injured in a grisly scene that has stunned the nation.

In a bizarre and tragic twist, a truck loaded with coffins—yes, coffins—belonging to the Kenyan Urban People Association (KUPA), slammed into a matatu full of passengers. The aftermath was nothing short of carnage, with the rear end of the matatu crushed beyond recognition. Images and videos circulating online captured the shocking wreckage, sparking outrage and sorrow across social media.

Rescue teams raced against time, ferrying the injured to Siaya Teaching and Referral Hospital as eyewitnesses watched in horror. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, but the trauma has left deep scars—both physical and emotional.

This tragedy comes just days after another deadly crash on Thika Road near Membley in Ruiru on April 19. In that incident, four people perished when a speeding private car rammed into an unmarked, parked trailer near Kenyatta University Referral Hospital. The driver, reportedly going too fast in poor visibility, had no chance to stop in time.

As blood continues to stain Kenya’s roads, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has declared war on reckless driving. A national crackdown has begun, targeting drunk drivers, speed law defaulters, and vehicles operating without speed governors.

“Enough is enough,” said NTSA Chair Khatib Mwashetani. “We are going after every violator. No more excuses. Lives are being lost senselessly.”

Authorities are urging all drivers to slow down, stay sober, rest adequately, and ensure their vehicles are properly maintained. Drivers of stalled vehicles are also being warned: Mark them clearly or face the law.

As Kenya reels from back-to-back disasters, one thing is clear—the roads have become battlegrounds, and unless something changes fast, more lives will be lost.
