Gatundu South MP Gabriel Gathuka Kagombe has launched a blistering attack on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of exaggerating his political influence in the Mt. Kenya region.
In a heated interview on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, Kagombe dismissed Gachagua’s perceived dominance, claiming the ex-DP is acting without the blessing of the Kikuyu community and overstepping his boundaries.
“Gachagua is trying to crown himself as the region’s kingpin without the people’s mandate. His so-called influence is overhyped, and we know the real situation on the ground,” Kagombe declared.
His remarks come in response to Gachagua’s assertion on March 17 that his role in the 2022 elections was crucial in President William Ruto’s decision to pick him as running mate. Speaking on Kameme FM, Gachagua insisted that Ruto recognized his strong political footing, which led to his selection despite his independent stance.
“President Ruto knew I wasn’t a ‘Yes Sir’ kind of politician, yet he still chose me because of my influence during the campaigns,” Gachagua claimed.
Meanwhile, Gachagua has set the stage for a political showdown with his latest move—unveiling his own political party. In a fiery media interview on February 9, he announced that his party is fully functional and gearing up for a grand launch in May 2025.
“Our party is like a brand-new machine, engine roaring, Michelin tires in place, and I’m firmly in the driver’s seat. The time has come! In May, we unveil the name, establish our bases, and transition people from UDA into our new home,” Gachagua revealed.
He extended an invitation to other communities, promising an inclusive political future.
“We are opening the doors for everyone. Some have already secured their seats at the table, and for those who haven’t—now is your chance,” he declared.
With political tensions in Central Kenya heating up, all eyes are now on Gachagua’s next move and whether Kagombe’s sharp criticism signals deeper divisions within the region’s leadership.
