Babu Owino Says Government Stripped Him of Security in Apparent Retaliation Over June 25 Protest Role.

Embakasi East MP Paul “Babu” Owino has accused the government of withdrawing his official security detail following his active participation in the June 25 protests marking the anniversary of last year’s deadly anti-Finance Bill demonstrations.

In a statement released on Thursday morning, June 26, Owino denounced the move as a blatant attack on democracy and a direct attempt to intimidate elected leaders who stand with citizens.

“Yesterday, I stood with the people, not against the nation, but for its future. I exercised my democratic right to protest peacefully against the actions of a government that is failing its citizens. Today, in retaliation, the government has withdrawn my official security,” Owino said.

MP’s Defiant Stand

Owino, renowned for his outspoken advocacy and fiery presence during last year’s unrest—when he famously vaulted over the Parliament fence to join protesters—was a prominent figure in the Nairobi CBD demonstrations on June 25 to honour Gen Z activists killed during the 2024 protests.

Video footage captured him being carried shoulder-high by a sea of demonstrators—an image that has since gone viral.

He described the security withdrawal as a sign that “a government that fears accountability, not one that serves” had taken power.

A Broader Pattern of Intimidation?

No official from the Interior Ministry or Nairobi metropolitan police has issued a statement explaining the decision. However, Owino’s supporters and civil society advocates warn this may form part of a disturbing trend targeting dissenting public figures—others being stripped of security or harassed for challenging the status quo .

Defying the Threat

Owino vowed to remain undeterred and urged Kenyans to stay united and vigilant.

“I do not fear intimidation. I will not be silenced. My voice, and the voice of every citizen demanding justice, fairness, and freedom, will only grow louder. Kenyans are my security,” he declared.

He urged citizens and leaders alike to uphold democratic values and resist moves meant to suppress truth and accountability .
