Panic and sorrow have gripped Kenya’s legal fraternity following the sudden and mysterious death of young lawyer Peter Kagwi, who was discovered lifeless in his Nairobi office on Tuesday evening.
A chilling announcement from the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Nairobi Branch confirmed the shocking development, revealing that Kagwi, a legal practitioner at Kagwi Githuku & Company Advocates, was found dead under circumstances that remain highly suspicious.
LSK Chairperson Eric Kivuva described Kagwi as a passionate, dedicated advocate who was deeply committed to his work, especially in championing mediation as a dispute resolution tool.
“We are devastated by the sudden passing of Wakili Peter Kagwi. He was a remarkable professional, a problem solver, and an advocate for justice. His absence leaves a deep void,” part of the statement read.
Beyond his legal career, Kagwi was an ambitious leader with interests in politics, entrepreneurship, and spiritual mentorship. He also served as a Trainee Certified Secretary under KASNEB and was a Youth Leader and Discipleship Facilitator at DICC All Saints Community Chapel in Ruai.
Cause of Death Unknown—Investigations Launched
The cause of his untimely demise remains a mystery, with the LSK confirming that investigations are currently underway. However, concerns are rising over the safety and security of lawyers in Kenya, following repeated warnings from LSK President Faith Odhiambo about growing threats against legal professionals.
Odhiambo has previously sounded the alarm over rising cases of intimidation, threats, and violence targeting lawyers—especially those handling high-stakes human rights cases, corruption probes, and politically sensitive matters.
With Kagwi’s death adding to these fears, calls for the government to act swiftly and strengthen protections for legal practitioners are growing louder.
