Pastor Ng’ang’a Under Fire for Shocking Remarks Linking Rape to Women’s Appearance

Activists from the Coalition Against Sexual Violence (CASV) are calling for swift action from the government and relevant authorities regarding controversial remarks made by Pastor James Ng’ang’a.

The pastor faced public outrage on Sunday, January 19, after he mocked women and suggested that their clothing and makeup choices contributed to instances of rape. As the founder of Neno Evangelism Centre, he angered many when he claimed that women weren’t attractive enough to provoke rapists, despite their efforts with cosmetics.

“Women are being raped, yet you’re not even attractive enough to be raped. You’re not beautiful, that’s why no one is even attempting to rape you,” he said, as reported by CASV.

His comments sparked widespread indignation and debate across the country, including from political leaders. However, nearly a week later, no official action has been taken against him.

CASV has condemned the pastor’s remarks, demanding that he publicly apologize and retract his statement. They have also called on the government and other relevant bodies to take action against individuals who perpetuate harmful attitudes that contribute to sexual violence.

“We urge Pastor Ng’ang’a to apologize and withdraw his damaging comments. We also call for the government to hold him and others accountable who use their platforms to incite violence,” the coalition stated.

They have also appealed to the religious community to ensure their leaders promote messages rooted in human rights and social justice.

According to CASV, sexual violence is a serious crime fueled by power, control, and disrespect for human dignity, not by superficial traits such as appearance.

Other activist groups and leaders have joined in denouncing the pastor’s comments, calling them inappropriate and a violation of dignity, respect, and justice.

The Kenya Women’s Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) also condemned Ng’ang’a’s words, labeling them harmful and insensitive.

As of this report, Pastor Ng’ang’a has not issued any response to the calls for an apology.
