Three Suicides in One Day Rock Kenya as Authorities Sound Alarm on Alarming Trend

Detectives are looking into the death of a patient who reportedly took his own life in a restroom at Marani Level Four Hospital in Kisii County. According to hospital authorities, the patient, identified as 47-year-old Daniel Orare, was discovered lifeless in the toilet on the morning of Tuesday, January 21, just hours after the incident. He had been admitted to the facility for over a week while being treated for an unspecified illness.

Investigators at the scene determined that the patient used a hospital bed sheet to hang himself, fastening it to the shower tap. The reason behind his actions remains unclear, and police are continuing their investigation. The body was transported to the local mortuary, where it will undergo a post-mortem examination.

This case is one of three suicides reported to authorities on the same day across the country. In a separate incident in Morombo village, Sengera, Kisii County, the body of 49-year-old Simeon Nyatuka was discovered hanging from a tree with a blue mosquito net. Local residents noted that he had been living alone for years following a separation from his wife. His body, which bore no visible injuries, was moved to the Kisii Referral Hospital mortuary, awaiting further examination.

In another case in Mithanga village, Kathiani, Machakos County, 65-year-old Paul Muoki was found dead in his home. He had used a sisal rope to hang himself from the rafters of his three-room house. No suicide note was recovered, and his body was taken to Kathiani Level Four Hospital mortuary for an autopsy.

Meanwhile, in Maua, Meru County, a man’s body was found by the roadside near a petrol station and has been sent to the morgue for post-mortem analysis.

Authorities are increasingly alarmed by the rising number of suicides, with reports indicating an average of two cases each day. The World Health Organization highlights several factors contributing to such tragedies, including financial difficulties, unemployment, academic stress, grief, legal issues, and mental health challenges such as depression and bipolar disorder. Other contributing elements may include substance abuse, bullying, previous suicide attempts, and family history of similar incidents.
