University of Nairobi student arrested for trying to set fire to a hotel linked to President Ruto.

On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, police arrested Bernard Wangila Ojiambo. He is a fourth-year University of Nairobi student.

He was arrested for attempting to burn Hotel Boulevard, reportedly owned by President William Ruto. The incident occurred during student protests against the higher education funding model. Ojiambo was found near the hotel with a five-liter jerrycan of petrol.

Ojiambo was charged with intending to commit arson. He was caught with the petrol can near the hotel. This occurred during student clashes with anti-riot police officers.

Despite denying the charge, the suspect was detained by Senior Principal Magistrate Robinson Ondieki. Defense lawyer Danstan Omari requested lenient bail terms for Ojiambo.

He stated that Ojiambo was arrested on his way home and defended pro bono.

The Director of Public Prosecutions opposed the bail application, citing earlier arson cases. The magistrate reserved his bail ruling and ordered Ojiambo’s detention at Capitol Hill Police Station until a later date.

The incident has sparked controversy. It has also raised concerns about student protests and the safety of properties linked to prominent figures in Kenya.

The arrest of the University of Nairobi student highlights the tensions surrounding higher education funding. It also underscores the risks related to student protests. The case highlights the importance of addressing grievances through peaceful means.

It also underscores respecting the rule of law to prevent such incidents in the future. The legal proceedings and decisions about Ojiambo’s case will be closely monitored by the public and authorities in Kenya.
