One person died in Nakuru County. That happened after floods swept them away due to heavy rains. This occurred in the Eveready Area near the Nakuru-Nairobi highway. The rains led to the formation of sinkholes in the region, causing panic among motorists.

Residents saw the man being swept away by the waters after slipping into one of the sinkholes. The incident prompted calls for residents to move to safer areas. People are also calling for the government to construct waterways to prevent such occurrences.

The formation of sinkholes near the Nakuru-Nairobi highway has sparked fear among motorists, with some forced to seek other routes. Nakuru County, located near the Great Rift Valley, is prone to sinkhole formation due to its geological characteristics.

In a similar incident earlier in the year, senior geologists investigated large trenches in the Kiambogo area. These trenches formed after heavy rains.

The Mining Principal Secretary highlighted the susceptibility of the region to geohazards like sinkholes, landslides, and earthquakes.

The Mining PS explained that Nakuru County’s geological composition makes it prone to sinkhole formation. This is particularly true in the western part with underground drainage channels.

The porous unconsolidated pumice and volcanic ash create vulnerabilities in the land’s structural integrity. These vulnerabilities lead to the development of sinkholes that can damage property and roads.

The government has issued warnings to locals to vacate hazardous areas. It emphasizes the need for proactive measures to mitigate the impact of geohazards in the region.

In response to the sinkhole incident, residents living near the affected area were advised to move to safer locations. The government’s deployment of geologists to investigate sinkhole formations underscores the ongoing efforts to tackle geological risks in Nakuru County.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding geohazards. It also highlights the need for managing geohazards in regions prone to such natural phenomena.

It emphasizes the need for proactive measures to guarantee public safety and infrastructure resilience.
