A horrific road accident in Kibirigwi along the busy Kenol-Marua highway has left a primary school pupil dead and several others nursing serious injuries. The fatal collision, which occurred on Friday morning, has sparked immediate public outrage as residents renew calls for urgent safety measures along the notorious transit corridor.
According to witnesses at the scene, the accident involved a public service vehicle that lost control before ramming into a group of students walking to school. The impact was severe, resulting in the immediate death of one pupil, while several others were rushed to nearby health facilities in critical condition. Paramedics and local police arrived shortly after the incident to conduct a rescue operation, but the scene remained chaotic for several hours as traffic along the highway was completely paralyzed.
“It is a heartbreaking morning for the community,” said a local official present at the site. “Our children are no longer safe walking to school, and the speed at which vehicles traverse this stretch is a recipe for disaster.”
The Kenol-Marua highway, a critical artery connecting the central and upper regions of Kenya, has been under intense scrutiny due to its high accident frequency. Despite ongoing expansion works and promises of improved safety infrastructure, local residents argue that pedestrian safety remains severely neglected. Many are now calling for the installation of additional speed bumps, clearly marked zebra crossings, and consistent traffic enforcement to prevent further loss of life.
Police have commenced an investigation into the cause of the accident, with preliminary reports suggesting a possible brake failure in the vehicle involved. The wreckage has been towed to a nearby police station, and a manhunt for the driver, who reportedly fled the scene immediately after the crash, is currently underway.
