The Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja wants the Officer Commanding Station of the area where two people were brutally shot in Embu during protests over the state of Ishiara Level 4 Hospital to be recalled to allow for a transparent probe.
The National Police Service (NPS) said in a statement that a special team of detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was dispatched to carry out thorough investigations into the shooting.
Likewise, the Regional and County Security teams have moved into the affected area and will carry out their assessment.
The protests erupted on April 14 over concerns about deteriorating services at the Mbeere-North facility, including a lack of drugs, inadequate staffing and poor service delivery.
The police responded to the protest, where tension reportedly escalated as the officers attempted to disperse the crowd. Witnesses claim that officers fired live bullets, fatally injuring two demonstrators.
Several others are said to have sustained injuries in the chaos, with some rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has also launched a probe into the incident and dispatched a Rapid Response Team to the area.
