The political battle that people expected to happen in Western Kenya has turned into a disorganized battle that uses chemical weapons for crowd control. Security forces escalated their military actions by using teargas to create a lockdown at the Amalemba Grounds in Kakamega, which destroyed the area before Senator Edwin Sifuna’s “Linda Mwananchi” rally was scheduled to start.
The aggressive police operation converts a domestic political gathering into an intense struggle between assembly rights and state authority, which refuses to make concessions.
The actual purpose of the intervention exists within its current state. Eyewitnesses report that the canisters were deployed not to disperse a violent crowd, but to prevent one from even forming. The police emergency response to the situation used irritants so officers could control crowd movement after they completed stage establishment. The system creates an invisible boundary that prevents access to the site through chemical methods that do not require actual judicial authorization.
The authorities implemented their crackdown after the Kakamega police command spent two days denying they received the official rally notification. The state has reacted to Senator Sifuna’s constitutional requests with complete forceful resistance despite his claim that all legal requirements were satisfied.
The Ministry of Interior delivered a clear statement that declared that the “Linda Mwananchi” movement, which plans to organize protests against rising living costs, represents a national security danger instead of an acceptable democratic demonstration.
As large white smoke clouds move across the residential zones that surround Amalemba, the region has reached an extreme state of political conflict. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) supporters have started to gather again in hidden areas of the city, according to reports, which will lead to their violent pursuit of opposition forces.
The democratic map of Kakamega is currently being redrawn with batons and canisters. The main venue has become a toxic no-go zone, which means the rally will happen, but people will fight to regain control of the podium.
