The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has entered a radical new era following the decisive election of Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama as its 52nd president. Kanjama achieved victory in the crucial electoral contest that determined the future direction of the nation’s legal profession through his election to lead the country.
The activist leadership that his predecessors established through their leadership of the organization faced a complete transformation when Kanjama assumed control of the organization through his victory.
Kanjama’s success contains an ironic “twisted” element that shows his actual identity. He enters the position of power from which he led the organization because people see him as a traditionalist who follows procedures with all details. The Kanjama presidency creates new dangers of executive overreach because it shows how Kanjama uses pure legal concepts as his main weapon against political statements.
Kanjama’s ascent is not merely a change in personnel; it is a mandate for a “Black Letter” law revolution. The Senior Counsel presented himself as the protector of bar dignity during the campaign while he protected the society from political interference, and he enforced penalties against state personnel who violated court rulings.
The LSK will conduct its operations through courtroom procedures, which will enable it to terminate illegal government activities according to his leadership methods.
