The President of Kenya, William Ruto, announced the complete modernization of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training system through a new partnership with the Italian government, which will make vocational education the main element of national economic development and international partnerships.
The announcement presents an extensive increase of international assistance, which will support the development of technical education programs in Kenya.
President Ruto announced that the partnership will deliver additional financial resources together with equipment and expertise to all TVET facilities across the nation, according to a statement that he issued after conducting high-level talks with his Italian counterparts. The government currently makes efforts to increase vocational training enrollment while it works to eliminate essential workforce skill shortages.
Ruto described the Italy cooperation as a strategic investment in Kenya’s youth, emphasizing that improved TVET infrastructure and modernized facilities will boost employment prospects and support the government’s broader economic agenda. The agreement has the potential to attract substantial international investment and expertise from abroad toward educational institutions because it uses Italy’s advanced strategies for professional development and industrial training programs.
The government intends to use partnership resources for three main purposes: equipment upgrades, digital and technical laboratory expansions, and faculty development in engineering, manufacturing, and information and communications technology specializations. The officials involved in the negotiations between the two parties confirm that the agreement contains provisions for institutional partnerships, which will enable knowledge exchange and joint development of educational programs to help Kenyan TVET students achieve international qualification standards.
The announcement comes against the backdrop of the government’s ambitious objective to significantly raise TVET enrollment—a policy that aims to prepare Kenya’s workforce for the needs of the global economy that evolves continuously while the country works to solve its youth unemployment crisis.
