The police arrested a former Member of Parliament and three other individuals after they stole two lorries that belonged to Murang’a County. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) made arrests after detectives finished their month-long investigation which tracked stolen vehicles through multiple counties.
The DCI named Peter Njuguna Gitau as their suspect who served as the Member of Parliament for Mwea Constituency. The police arrested Gitau and four other men who stole from a location in Gatanga, Murang’a County which was reported as missing on August 16, 2025.
The detectives found two Isuzu lorries which included one FVZ model vehicle that had registration number KDQ 845T and one FRR vehicle that had registration number KDL 078W. The investigation revealed that the thieves had used fake number plates to drive the stolen vehicles away from the theft site while using this method to escape police detection.
The OSU detectives discovered the stolen lorries after the suspects confessed to their whereabouts at a location in Mombasa County. The DCI now holds the recovered lorries at their facility which they acquired from Makupa. The Murang’a County government plans to retrieve their stolen vehicles because the theft reduced their transportation capacity, which affected their government operations.
The Senior DCI officials showed evidence of their operational work because they spent months working together with regional intelligence units to find stolen vehicles and catch the theft perpetrators. The suspects will face multiple charges in court which include theft of county property and possession of forged documents.
A former legislator faces arrest because of his alleged involvement in a high-profile theft which has sparked national public discussion about political integrity and government accountability while it draws attention to the behavior of all current and former elected officials.
