Dr. Fred Matiang’i, the former Interior Cabinet Secretary, has made a very surprising political statement by revealing that he once was seen as a potential successor to former President Uhuru Kenyatta, but he straight away turned down the option.
This was brought to light by Matiang’i during an interview where he frankly answered the question of his political ambitions and made clear his stance on the transfer of power that occurred right after Uhuru’s reign.Matiang’i remarked that the discussions on possible successors were held behind the scenes during the last days of the previous regime, and his name was one of the ones mentioned by some political players.
Nonetheless, he asserted that he was not at all ready to take up the position personally and instead opted to focus on his work and obligations in the government. The former minister, who is known for his firm leadership and who held important portfolios in the government, explained that his decision was not influenced by external forces or lack of opportunities but was simply a personal one.
Matiang’i’s words come at a time when the political spotlight is on him because Kenya is quickly approaching the 2027 general elections. Although he is already seen as a potential candidate, he has allied himself with the opposition and has openly joined the political battle.
Nevertheless, the revelation that he had once turned down the opportunity to be Uhuru’s successor adds a new angle to his ever-evolving public image. Political analysts have suggested that his declaration might affect voters’ views on his leadership ambitions and strategies in the lead-up to the next elections.
