Kenya Railways has announced the construction and operation of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Mombasa to Suswa.
In a statement on Friday, May 24, the corporation said that the construction and operation of SGR along the route was part of its transformative 2023-2027 Strategic Plan, which was launched on Friday.
Kenya Railways said that the strategic plan was aligned with Kenya Vision 2030 and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.”This plan marks a new era for the railway sector, aiming to enhance efficiency, connectivity, and economic growth.
“Some of the key highlights of our 2023-2027 Strategic Plan include the successful construction and operation of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Mombasa to Suswa,” read part of the statement.
The corporation further intimated that in the strategic plan, it was intending to revamp the Metre Gauge Railway (MGR) network and revitalize Kisumu Port.It further added that it had enhanced passenger services across major cities and increased the rail share at the Port of Mombasa.
“We have also significantly increased the rail share at the Port of Mombasa from 4% to 26%, and enhanced both freight and passenger services across major cities, driving economic growth and connectivity throughout the region,” Kenya Railways stated.
Currently, the SGR services are between Nairobi and Mombasa.
On Tuesday, May 14, Kenya Railways announced that it would soon introduce premium services on the SGR trains.
