National Shock: Only 18 People Register as Voters in Entire Nyamira County!

In a shocking revelation, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced that only 18 new voter registrations were submitted in Nyamira County since the launch of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise on September 29.

The number places Nyamira at the bottom of the national list and ignites fears of severe disenfranchisement ahead of the 2027 general elections. This figure is dramatically low compared to other counties across the country. As of October 8, the IEBC reported 20,754 new voters registered nationwide, with 3,207 transfers and 61 updates to existing records.

Conflicting Figures, Fading Confidence.

While IEBC’s national data concedes slow uptake, the Nyamira statistic stands out as uniquely dismal. It underscores a broader worry: that registration momentum — particularly among youth — is failing to materialize. IEBC officials themselves admitted that turnout has fallen short of expectations. Critics argue that the poor numbers may stem from logistical mishaps, lack of public awareness, or even suspicion amid political tension.

Senate Alarm and Legal Consequences Loom.

Senators have seized on the data in a heated session, demanding answers from IEBC leadership. Some propose judicial scrutiny, citing possible violations of citizens’ right to be registered.

The deliberate or negligent exclusion of large voter blocs could have serious legal and electoral implications.IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon responded defensively, urging all eligible Kenyans—especially youth—to visit local constituency offices and register before deadlines expire.
