The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested a university ICT officer. The officer solicited a bribe to modify a student’s marks on the university portal.
In a statement, EACC reported that Evans Matiro Watenya, an employee at the Cooperative University of Kenya, demanded a Ksh 50,000 bribe from a student to rectify an error in the student’s examination results on the portal.
EACC noted that the student is scheduled to graduate in December 2024.
“The complainant reportedly attained a degree classification of second-class honours upper division, which was inexplicably changed on the portal to second-class honours lower division. When she inquired with the ICT department, the suspect informed her that the error could only be corrected if she provided Ksh 50,000 as ‘tea’ for him,” the agency stated.
According to EACC, the student was unable to raise the demanded amount and decided to report the incident to EACC, which subsequently launched an operation to apprehend Matiro after confirming the allegations.
“Unable to raise the amount, the complainant reported the incident to EACC, which, after verifying the allegations, conducted an operation and arrested the suspect within the university compound after he received Ksh 30,000, the initial part of the requested sum,” EACC stated.
Following his arrest on Friday, October 11, Matiro was taken to EACC Integrity Centre police station for processing and was later booked at Kilimani police station.
