Recent developments confirm that the individual filmed being forcibly placed into a vehicle in Ongata Rongai was arrested for involvement in fraudulent activities.
The widely circulated video incited outrage on social media, leading many to misinterpret the situation as an abduction.
The footage shows the man attempting to resist as he is compelled into the car by his captors.
Witnesses accused the vehicle’s occupants of being kidnappers, but it has since been clarified that the man, identified as Duke Mainge, was detained after allegedly trying to defraud an M-Pesa outlet.
CCTV from a mobile money shop in Ongata Rongai revealed Duke entering the premises while posing as a customer.
After engaging with the attendant, he claimed to be in contact with Safaricom agents. His behavior raised suspicions, prompting the attendant to alert the public, who subsequently contacted the police, arriving in plain clothes.
“I asked him to speak to a Safaricom care agent. When I answered his phone, it was a random Safaricom number,” recounted the M-Pesa operator.
Despite the onlookers’ reactions, law enforcement transported the suspect to Ongata Rongai Police Station, initiating an investigation into his activities.
Preliminary police findings indicated that Duke was part of a scheme defrauding M-Pesa agents nationwide. The suspect, however, refuted the charges against him, asserting that he was arrested without justification.
“Someone instructed me to go to an M-Pesa shop to connect him with an agent. I was subsequently forced into a car and handcuffed, despite having committed no offense,” the detained individual claimed.
