At least four people have died, and one police officer suffered major injuries after a police patrol vehicle crashed on the Matuu–Mwingi Road on Sunday evening.
The Nguutani Police Station vehicle lost control and rolled over multiple times at a point close to Mwatungo Primary School, which is located two kilometers from Kithyoko market, according to preliminary reports from local law enforcement.
Emergency responders arrived at a chaotic scene where eyewitnesses reported seeing a patrol vehicle that had been destroyed and was lying across the roadside. The police officers and one civilian who were on duty at the time of the accident were in the vehicle when it crashed.
One officer died at the crash site, while two officers died after they received medical treatment at local medical facilities. Authorities confirmed that the civilian passenger died after reaching Matuu Level Four Hospital.
The police sources reported that the hospital is treating the last surviving officer, who is in stable condition. The investigators are still examining the cause of the rollover accident because police officers have not yet released a complete report about the various factors that led to the accident.
The accident has caused residents and road safety advocates to express new concerns about the Mwatungo stretch, which drivers have identified as a dangerous area that drivers should avoid. The same location witnessed another deadly accident last week when a secondary school teacher died after his motorcycle lost control, which resulted in his spouse sustaining injuries that required medical treatment.
The Migwani Police Commander refused to give an official statement because the officer needed more time to confirm the details about the accident.
