THE STOLEN SWEAT: Teachers Left Penniless After Sh400 Million Sports Fund Evaporates

The Ministry of Education has made an unexpected financial declaration that proves its financial insolvency because it has disclosed a Sh400 million deficit that exists within the National Sports Fund. The complete financial shortfall has blocked all payments that should have been given to thousands of teachers who worked as officials and coaches during the national school games.

The “twisted” irony of this crisis exists because the government implements its full any-service system for Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), while sports and talent development serve as the main foundation for the future development of the country.

The state requires athletes to perform well in competitions while simultaneously stealing money from the educators who help students achieve success. The ministry has made a strategic national asset unavailable to professionals because it refuses to pay these workers, which results in educational staff working as unpaid workers who maintain trophy collections.

The ministry officials acknowledged the funding shortfall because they disclosed that all educational compensation funds have disappeared into bureaucratic processes. Teachers who used their personal funds to drive students and organize activities are now experiencing disbelief about the Treasury’s financial explanations.

The Sh400 million debt, which legal experts and union leaders describe as a ticking time bomb. The upcoming sports season will face complete disruption when teachers complete their threat to withdraw all their work duties without receiving immediate cash funding.

The situation goes beyond a budget error because it represents a major contract violation, which shows how unstable Kenya’s education funding system currently is. The ministry asked the treasury for financial assistance while the government declared to teachers that their hard work for the nation holds value, but their existence does not matter. The field is prepared, and the students wait, but the whistle-blowers have left without any results.
