Teargas Erupts at Kitengela Rally, Sifuna’s “Linda Wananchi” Tour Descends into Chaos

A political tour by ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna erupted into chaos today as police deployed teargas to disperse crowds, abruptly halting a “Linda Wananchi” rally in Kitengela. The dramatic confrontation has intensified tensions between opposition supporters and law enforcement, raising urgent questions about political space, civil rights, and public order ahead of Kenya’s 2027 elections.

The disturbance unfolded shortly after Sifuna stepped onto the makeshift stage outside Kitengela town to address constituents on matters ranging from cost of living pressures to government accountability. Eyewitnesses reported that a large, enthusiastic gathering quickly grew in size, prompting a substantial police presence. Moments later, officers fired multiple canisters of teargas into the crowd, sending panicked supporters scattering into nearby streets and alleys.

In the ensuing confusion, several participants were seen clutching their faces and eyes, while others sought shelter in shops and residential compounds. Local medics treating minor injuries described the situation as “volatile,” with reports of some attendees complaining of breathing difficulties. Law enforcement sources contend the action was taken after organizers allegedly failed to produce a valid public gathering permit, though no official documentation has been publicly presented.

Speaking after the incident, Sifuna condemned the teargas deployment as an “unjustified assault on peaceful assembly” and accused authorities of attempting to intimidate opposition activity. “We came here to speak for the people of Kitengela, to hear their voices, not to be met with force,” he said in a brief televised statement while still surrounded by security aides.

Opposition activists quickly mobilized on social media, calling the action a “political crackdown” and urging supporters to remain peaceful but resolute. Local business owners have since reported closures as panicked residents fled the vicinity.

County officials have called for calm, stating they are investigating whether proper protocols for the rally were followed. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority is expected to review the events and determine whether the use of teargas was proportionate and lawful, a process that could ignite further debate on political freedoms in Kenya’s charged electoral climate.
