Six members of suspected poaching arrested in Garissa

Acting on credible intelligence about a vehicle transporting armed individuals and illegal wildlife products, the officers arrested the suspects along the Garissa–Daadab road at Alango Arba (Hagarbul) in Fafi Sub-County.

Shortly after, the suspects who were in a white Suzuki Alto with registration number KDC 529C were arrested.

They include Ali Idow Yussuf (66), who was armed with an AK-47 rifle loaded with 13 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition and an extra magazine with 30 rounds, tucked into a jungle pouch.

He was dressed in jungle combat gear and claimed to be an NPR officer based in Gadude.

The other suspects are Fuad Hussein Mukhtar (30), the driver; Mahat Diriye Hussein (34); Hassan Jehow Diriye (56); Idle Farah Dagane (52); and Hussein Ibrahim Abdulrahman (45).

A search of the vehicle revealed approximately 200 kilograms of suspected giraffe meat and a giraffe head carcass, a brutal testament to poaching in the area.

The estimated value of the haul is KSh 200,000. Additionally, seven mobile phones were recovered, believed to be used for coordinating the illegal operation.

The firearm and ammunition have been secured as exhibits at the KWS Garissa Station.

The suspects were initially detained at Garissa Police Station and later transferred to KWS Headquarters in Nairobi, where they await arraignment.
