Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has moved from street protests to an exact scientific research mission in which he wants to perform a complete “census” of all Linda Mwananchi supporters. The opposition developed a new approach to their political power assessment, which they implemented through their creation of two different voter databases that would assist them in their objective to remove President William Ruto from office in 2027.
The “twisted” brilliance of Sifuna’s directive lies in its challenge to the state’s monopoly on citizen data. Sifuna bypasses traditional party membership drives through his request for a movement-specific census, which he uses to construct a “shadow voter register.”
The document functions as a tactical instrument that will help the opposition prove their voter strength at every stage until the 2027 election date, when they will use all their strength except for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) disputed figures.
Sifuna believes that public demonstrations mislead people because they show false information, while actual data provides complete knowledge. The complete process to send Ruto home needs essential planning, according to him.
The movement will build a local mobilization system through this census, which will enable them to operate their system whenever they choose to do so.
The urgent nature of the present call demonstrates that younger members of the opposition now understand that the “broad-based” government creates an empty space within their political system.
