Three siblings were seriously injured in a violent robbery on the Southern Bypass in Nairobi on Saturday night while traveling back to the city from their rural home.
A fourth sibling, who was also in the car, managed to escape harm by locking herself inside the vehicle during the attack.
The incident unfolded after a gang placed stones on the road, causing their car tires to deflate. The siblings stopped to address the punctures, unaware they were walking into a trap.
The eldest sister, who was driving, suffered a facial cut and a fracture, while her two brothers sustained severe cuts to the chest and neck, leaving them unconscious.

The family, en route from Bomet to Nairobi, encountered the gang after their car struck a stone, blowing out two tires. Despite managing to move the vehicle to the roadside, they were ambushed while attempting to retrieve a portable tire inflator from the boot.
“We offered the robber whatever he wanted, and he initially took a bag and some items from the car,” the driver recounted. However, the attacker returned moments later, demanding more valuables, including mobile phones and cash.
The family lost two phones, Sh2,000, laptops, a PlayStation, and ATM cards. The eldest sister crossed the road to seek help from passing motorists, during which the robber reappeared. Fortunately, other drivers arrived and rushed the injured siblings to the hospital.
Lang’ata Sub-County Police Commander Monica Kimani confirmed that three suspects were arrested in a nearby forested area. However, it remains uncertain if they were directly involved in the attack.
The victims, currently hospitalized, described the attacker as a man aged between 25 and 30 years who did not conceal his identity.
Kimani noted that the Southern Bypass section where the attack occurred was largely deserted due to its temporary closure for road repairs, contributing to the vulnerability of the area. This stretch has become notorious for robberies involving gangs who use obstacles like spikes and stones to trap vehicles.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) recently closed the section between Ole Sereni and Ngong Road Interchange for bridge repair work, a closure scheduled to last until January 5.
Police have deployed additional officers, including undercover detectives, to patrol the area in response to rising security concerns. An investigation is underway, with an identification parade planned after the victims recover.
The family has also urged authorities to investigate the vandalism of their vehicle, which was towed to Lang’ata Police Station, alleging the damage occurred while it was in the station’s custody.
