Shock in Odinga Family: Raila’s Sister Beryl Achieng Passes Away.

Beryl Achieng Odinga, the youngest sister of the late opposition icon Raila Odinga, has died in a Nairobi hospital after a prolonged illness. According to her family, she had been ill for some time and hospitalised frequently, including at the same Indian medical facility where her brother received treatment.

A close family source confirmed the news, saying Achieng passed away peacefully after long-standing health complications. Her sister, Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga, expressed deep sorrow, describing Beryl’s death as a “sudden loss that leaves an immense void.”

Born into the renowned Odinga family, Beryl was known for her leadership in both public service and private life. Unlike her more politically active siblings, she maintained a relatively private profile. She made history as the first Black Town Clerk of Mutare in Zimbabwe and later served as Chairperson of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company.

Her passing comes only weeks after the national mourning that followed the death of Raila Odinga. The timing has intensified grief across both the Odinga family and the wider political community. Family members say they are planning a private memorial, and details of her funeral will be shared in due course.

For many Kenyans, Beryl’s death is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the Odinga family in public service — and a somber chapter in a story long defined by political resilience, leadership, and legacy.
