Former Justice Minister Martha Karua has blamed President William Ruto for Raila Odinga’s failed bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.
Speaking in a radio interview on February 25, 2025, Karua claimed Odinga had strong backing across Africa but was weighed down by Ruto’s “tainted image” and interference in foreign affairs.
“Raila had massive support, but his association with Ruto, who has a negative reputation in Africa, worked against him. Ruto’s meddling in other countries’ affairs played a role,” Karua stated.
Odinga, while addressing the loss at State House Mombasa on February 24, expressed gratitude to Ruto and other leaders for their support during his campaign.

“I’m happy to be back home and grateful to the President, Deputy President, Cabinet, and all Kenyans who stood with me on this journey,” Odinga remarked.
He also dismissed allegations that the government spent Ksh13 billion on his campaign, calling the claims baseless.
“I’ve seen reports of Ksh13 billion being used. I don’t know where these people get such figures or if they even understand what a billion means,” he said.
Odinga clarified that the government’s involvement was only in facilitating travel, while some host countries covered accommodation.
“There was no such expenditure. The government only assisted with transport to and from different countries,” he added.
President Ruto, on his part, praised Odinga’s efforts, calling him a “strong candidate” and vowing to continue working with him for the country’s progress.
“It was an honor to support him. He was present, committed, and campaigned diligently. Now, we look forward to working together in building the nation and fostering economic transformation,” Ruto stated.
