The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) has officially objected to the appointment of Aisha Jumwa as the new chair of the Kenya Roads Board (KRB), stating that it violates the regulations set out in the Kenya Roads Board Act No. 7.
In a statement released on Monday, January 27, the IEK called for Jumwa’s immediate removal from the position, demanding the appointment of a qualified individual in accordance with the law.
The engineering body argued that Jumwa lacks the necessary qualifications, as she does not have a background in civil, structural, or transport engineering, which are key to the responsibilities of the KRB.

IEK also criticized the process of her appointment, claiming it contravenes the Kenya Roads Board Act, specifically the First Schedule, which outlines the organizations responsible for nominating the chairperson. According to the Act, the chair must be selected from members nominated by organizations such as the Institution of Engineers of Kenya, the Automobile Association of Kenya, the Kenya Association of Manufacturers, the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya, and the Kenya Transport Association.
IEK emphasized that KRB’s role in overseeing the nation’s roads requires a leader with significant technical expertise, including assessing road conditions, advising on construction standards, and ensuring the proper execution of road projects.
To maintain legal and technical integrity, IEK urged that only individuals with relevant professional experience be considered for leadership positions within the KRB, to strengthen its ability to manage infrastructure challenges effectively.
