Shock as Bungoma Police Officer Is Caught in Goat Theft Scandal After Witch Doctor Trail

A police officer from the Khasoko Police Post has been arrested by his fellow officers after he was found snoozing in a suspect state on the property of a farmer who had reported his goat as stolen, and thus the case has amazed the local people and also made the authorities start an official inquiry into the theft of livestock.

The bizarre circumstances of the incident, including the victim’s use of traditional spiritual services, have lent a peculiar aspect to the criminal investigation.

The issue started on the night of January 15-16, 2026, when Asisa Juma, a resident of Mateka Market, reported that his brown she-goat with very distinct white patches had disappeared from the homestead. After days of unavailing searches in the nearby markets, Juma, full of desperation, finally resorted to a witch doctor to help him locate the animal.

The case turned upside-down in the early hours of January 20 when Juma was awakened by the sound of coughing coming from outside his compound. Upon checking, he saw Police Constable Kevin Abuga, who looked quite disturbed, lying under a tree in the yard.

Neighbors, who were shocked, together with the goat owner, called the police, and the scene was soon visited by high-ranking officers like the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO) and the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) from Bumula.

As per the official account, Abuga begged the residents not to hurt him and proposed to pay three times the goat’s worth, thus casting a new light on his actions and the question of his possible involvement in the livestock’s disappearance. The policeman has been taken into custody, and the National Police Service is carrying out a detailed probe into the case.

Livestock theft remains one of the most notorious crimes in the rural areas of Kenya where the agricultural sector thrives; however, the alleged involvement of a police officer in such an act is very distressing and could undermine the public’s confidence in the police. The analysts mention that the use of mysticism and the appearance of an officer at the spot have resulted in increased anxiety and scrutiny by the people.

The police haven’t declared yet if they are going to charge Abuga or not, but the local community leaders and the residents are asking for a quick and open solution. The odd situation indicates the rising irritation about livestock stealing and the need for the police to be professional, especially in those places where the farmers’ livelihoods are solely based on their animals.
