School Van Overturns in Endarasha, Scores of Pupils Injured

A school van operated by Mahehe Friends Academy lost control and overturned on Charity Road in Endarasha, Kieni West, which resulted in multiple student injuries that required a major rescue operation.

After the sun rose on Saturday, two witnesses reported that a school bus full of students lost control, which led to the bus crashing into a roadside ditch and injuring multiple children.

The scene required local rescue teams and more than seven ambulances and local residents to rescue pupils from the wreckage while they performed first aid and transported victims to Endarasha Health Centre. The Kenya Red Cross confirmed active emergency response operations, which created major difficulties for emergency responders, according to their assessment of the situation.

The crash site shows shocking images and videos that show the van’s windscreen broken while the front end suffered major damage and the interior seating became detached due to the van flipping over.

The authorities have not disclosed the accident’s official cause yet because eyewitnesses describe the driver losing control when driving through a tight turn on the rural road, which was probably caused by excessive speed or poor road conditions. The formal investigation process will start after the response team has finished dealing with urgent emergency requirements.

Medical staff at the health center are currently treating children for fractures and cuts and shock injuries while parents and community members wait in the facility. Local leaders said additional support and ambulances were deployed as the situation developed.

The education authorities in Nyeri County face increased pressure to define school transport safety standards because local residents doubt the existence of proper vehicle maintenance checks and driver qualification tests. National safety alarms have been triggered before by similar road incidents that involved student transportation when school vehicles faced operational failure.

Officials have requested people to remain calm because medical treatment for the injured continues while investigators examine the site of what might become this year’s biggest school transportation disaster in the area.
