President William Ruto has issued a bold call for Kenya to abandon what he described as a culture of average thinking and instead embrace a national pursuit of excellence.
Speaking during a recent address, the President warned that complacency, low ambition, and acceptance of mediocrity have slowed the country’s progress for decades.Ruto argued that Kenya’s greatest limitation is not resources or capability, but a mindset that settles for minimal effort and short-term gains.
He said the country can only unlock its full potential if citizens and leaders adopt higher standards in governance, innovation, education, and economic productivity.According to the President, his recent international engagements, including a visit to Japan, showed him the transformative impact of discipline, long-term planning, and high expectations.
He noted that Kenya must mirror such qualities if it hopes to measure up to global standards in development.Ruto outlined several areas where excellence must be prioritised, including food production, manufacturing, infrastructure, and national competitiveness.
He urged leaders to make firm and sometimes unpopular decisions, adding that real progress will require commitment beyond political slogans. The President also pointed out that Kenya already demonstrates world-class performance in sports, especially athletics, proving that the country is capable of operating at the highest level when discipline and focus are applied.
He challenged citizens to extend the same energy and commitment to all sectors.Ruto further called on universities to specialise in their strongest academic areas instead of trying to cover all fields. He said institutions of higher learning must build solid niches that can compete internationally and contribute meaningfully to national growth.
The President emphasised that Kenya’s future depends on cultivating a culture that rejects shortcuts and embraces excellence as a permanent national value. He added that mediocrity should no longer define the country’s institutions or leadership.
His message has sparked debate among Kenyans, with supporters praising the ambition of his remarks while critics question whether the government has created the necessary environment for such a transformation.
Ruto maintained that the country cannot afford to remain comfortable with average output, insisting that only a shift in mindset will propel Kenya towards the success it seeks.
