Ruto Shocks Nation with Bold Housing Directive for Police and Soldiers.

President William Ruto has ordered that a massive 20% of all government-constructed affordable housing units be reserved exclusively for members of the disciplined forces — a game-changing shift aimed at rescuing officers from chronic housing woes.

Addressing the nation in a firm, no-nonsense tone, Ruto declared that police officers, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel, prison staff, and the National Youth Service (NYS) will now have a guaranteed stake in the government’s flagship low-cost housing program.

“These units will be ringfenced,” the president asserted. “This is not just policy — it’s a promise.”

The decision comes amid mounting pressure over the dire state of housing for security personnel, many of whom are forced to endure cramped, substandard, or outrageously expensive living conditions — especially in urban centers like Nairobi, where government housing is scarce and rent prices are unforgiving.

Officers to Get Loans as Low as 3%

But Ruto wasn’t done. In a jaw-dropping reveal, he also announced ultra-low mortgage interest rates for security officers. Under the new plan:

  • Social housing buyers will pay just 3%
  • Affordable housing buyers, 6%
  • And those eyeing high-end units, only 9%

The rates, unprecedented in Kenya’s housing sector, are expected to give thousands of officers a real shot at home ownership — a milestone long out of reach for many.

Massive Construction Blitz Underway

Already, the government has built 2,000 housing units for police officers and is currently in the process of acquiring materials to erect an additional 17,000 homes.

And there’s more: Construction is ongoing for 3,000 new houses tailored for KDF personnel, with 10,000 more already green-lit.

The announcement came during the grand opening of the Central Bank of Kenya Police Housing Complex in Nairobi’s Industrial Area — a facility that now boasts 200 fully furnished two-bedroom apartments and 10 luxury three-bedroom units designed specifically for CBK-assigned officers.

Ruto emphasized that the initiative is not just about housing — it’s about restoring dignity to Kenya’s uniformed men and women.

“We are building more than homes,” he said. “We are building a future where our officers can live with honor.”

This bold move is already sending shockwaves across government sectors — and sparking fierce debates over who truly deserves priority in Kenya’s contested housing race.
