Ruto Shakes Up Security Sector, Reappoints Adiel Nyange Amid Controversy!

Ruto Retains Adiel Nyange as Private Security Board Chair for Another Term

President William Ruto has reinstated Adiel Nyange as the Chairperson of the Private Security Regulatory Authority (PSRA) for a fresh three-year term.

The announcement, made through a gazette notice on Friday, February 7, confirms Nyange’s continued leadership of the PSRA, following the dismissal of his predecessor, Stephen Ng’ang’a.

A former Nyeri County Police Commander, Nyange will oversee the authority at a crucial time when proposed regulations seek to empower private security guards, including allowing them to carry firearms while protecting state installations and critical infrastructure.

The PSRA’s 2024 amendment bill aims to regulate the issuance and use of firearms by security personnel assigned to high-risk duties such as guarding public spaces, financial institutions, and key government installations.

Beyond security reforms, Nyange will also face the challenge of enforcing the mandatory Ksh30,000 minimum wage for security guards—an issue that has sparked protests from the Private Security Guards Union (PSGU), citing widespread non-compliance by private firms.

With his extensive law enforcement background, Nyange is expected to implement reforms that will strengthen Kenya’s private security sector.
