Ruto Orders 34 Firms, Including Kenya Power & KPA, to Join E-Citizen in a Week

The Head of State accused the officials of potentially misusing public funds, asserting that there is a lack of transparency in their operations. Some of the organizations mentioned by the President include the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), and the nation’s electricity distributor, Kenya Power Company (KPLC).

During the First Anniversary of the eCitizen Directorate at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, the President disclosed that the 34 agencies had not yet adhered to his Presidential directive regarding the onboarding of essential services they provide on the eCitizen digital platform.

’’These entities have not yet complied with my directive to onboard government services in their departments on the platform,’’ Ruto expressed.

Ruto subsequently gave the agencies one week to comply with the directive or face termination. ’’They have one week to comply; otherwise, they can exit,’’ Ruto cautioned.

The visibly frustrated President enumerated all 34 state agencies that had not yet followed the directives, insisting that they were creating opportunities for revenue gaps.

’’These entities have not yet complied with my directive that their services, payments, and revenues must be on the eCitizen platform so that Treasury can monitor the revenues being collected by the government,’’ Ruto stated.

He also highlighted a situation involving some state agencies that had joined the eCitizen platform but still employed questionable methods by reverting to previous payment systems to avoid detection by the Treasury.

’’We still have government agencies that have accessed the eCitizen platform but occasionally revert to using alternative payment methods, including arrangements with certain banks,’’ he remarked.

The President instructed the directors of the problematic companies to comply within three days and present a report on their actions to his office.

’’I need a record of the last three months from government agencies that are on the eCitizen platform yet have opted to use alternative means with loopholes, so we can take measures against those undermining transparency,’’ Ruto added.

Additionally, Ruto cautioned the state agencies against disregarding his directive, emphasizing that ignorance would lead to vulnerabilities for the misappropriation of public funds.
