Kenya is making bold moves in the chaos gripping South Sudan! President William Ruto has shockingly tapped none other than former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as the country’s special envoy to Juba, just days after the shocking detention of South Sudan’s First Vice President, Riek Machar.
Odinga is set to land in South Sudan on Friday, March 28, in a high-stakes mission to prevent the nation from spiraling further into turmoil. This dramatic decision followed urgent talks between Ruto and a trio of influential regional leaders—South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir, Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, and Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
In a tense phone conversation, Ruto made it clear: Kenya was stepping in. “I spoke with President Salva Kiir about the shocking arrest and detention of First Vice President Riek Machar in South Sudan,” Ruto revealed. “Following my discussions with President Museveni and Prime Minister Abiy, I am dispatching a special envoy to engage, defuse tensions, and report back.”

Odinga won’t be going in alone—Kenya is sending in the cavalry! A team of elite police officers, handpicked from the Kenya Police Service (KPS), Administration Police Service (APS), and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), will accompany him. The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed this on Thursday, emphasizing that these officers will play a critical role in upholding peace, aligned with global security protocols.
Meanwhile, the African Union is also throwing its weight behind the crisis, announcing plans to deploy the AU Panel of the Wise to Juba in a desperate attempt to stabilize the situation.
The dramatic saga began on Wednesday, March 26, when armed security forces stormed Machar’s residence in Juba, forcibly disarmed his guards, and dragged him into custody. But the shock didn’t end there—his wife, Angela Teny, who serves as the Minister of Interior and Coordination, was also taken into detention.
Outrage is spreading like wildfire, with the United States leading the charge in demanding Machar’s immediate release. The world is now watching, waiting to see what comes next in this high-stakes political showdown.
