President Ruto Orders Reopening of Schools in Bandit-Hit Kerio Valley

President William Ruto has announced the reopening of schools in Kerio Valley that were previously shut down due to security concerns.

Speaking during a prayer service in Tot, Elgeyo-Marakwet County, on Sunday, Ruto assured that the government would aid in resettling displaced residents.

“For the 13 schools still closed, the Interior Ministry and Special Programs will ensure they are operational,” he said.

The President added that by the end of January, all displaced residents in West Pokot would be resettled, enabling students to return to their schools and reducing overcrowding in others.

Kerio Valley, which straddles Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, and Baringo counties, has faced repeated security challenges. Ruto pledged additional resources to improve education in the region, including hiring 100 new teachers to support affected schools.

The region has been severely impacted by cattle rustling and banditry, leading to numerous deaths, displacements, and the destruction of schools, particularly in West Pokot, Baringo, Samburu, Turkana, and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties.
