Security has been beefed up outside the Parliament buildings in Nairobi ahead of planned protests dubbed ‘occupy parliament’.

In photos and videos seen by Wamuzi News ke, there was a heavy presence of security personnel and police vehicles outside the Parliament premises.

A group of Kenyan who had started gathering on the scene was quickly dispersed by the police officers who were manning area. The police also arrested some of the protesters and took them into custody. Some of the protestors who were spotted around the Nairobi CBD were donned in black T-shirts.

In one of the videos, the police were seen arguing with a middle-aged woman before arresting her and bundling her into a waiting police land cruiser that later drove away.”Why are you arresting me?

I haven’t done anything,” the woman shouted. The protests were held to compel Members of Parliament to shoot down the Finance Bill 2024, which is to be tabled in Parliament later on Tuesday.

The bill, which has already faced heavy opposition from a number of Kenyans, seeks to increase revenue for the government through heavy taxation.

The protests came as President William Ruto was holding a Kenya Kwanza Parliamentary Group meeting at State House, Nairobi. Some of the attendees included Molo MP Kimani Kuria, who is also the chairman of the National Assembly Committee on Finance and Planning.

The committee retreated on June 13 to prepare a report after the conclusion of public participation on the Finance Bill 2024.

A Kenya Kwanza PG press briefing is expected before the MPs join the House to debate the document.
