One Dead, Several Injured in Horror Crash Between GSU Truck and Matatu on Meru–Nairobi Highway.

A chilling head-on collision this morning has left at least one person dead and multiple others injured after a General Service Unit (GSU) truck reportedly veered into the path of a Meru-bound matatu on the Meru–Embu stretch of the Meru–Nairobi Highway. The crash occurred in the Kiracha area during peak travel hours, turning a routine commute into a scene of carnage.

Eyewitnesses at the site describe the GSU vehicle as moving at high speed before it suddenly crossed into the opposite lane, crashing violently into the public service vehicle. The impact devastated the fronts of both vehicles, leaving wreckage scattered across the asphalt and transforming a tranquil highway into a site of desperation.

Authorities swiftly responded to distress calls, dispatching officers and rescue teams who administered emergency aid and cleared the wreckage. Medics confirmed that the injured were transported to Chuka Referral Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. Meanwhile, authorities believe one victim succumbed to injuries at the scene, though official confirmation is still pending.

In a separate incident earlier today, a cement-laden lorry also overturned near Mufu in Runyenjes, along the same highway. Although no fatalities were reported, three occupants sustained minor injuries and were rushed to Kyeni Mission Hospital.

This tragedy unfolds only hours after another deadly crash on Friday, June 27, along the Nairobi–Mombasa route near Kiongwani in Makueni County. That collision claimed two lives and injured three others after an avocado-laden pickup collided head-on with a fuel tanker.

As traffic police continue to manage recovery efforts and reopen the highway, authorities have launched investigations to determine the causes of this morning’s crash. Preliminary findings suggest excessive speed and possible driver error as key factors.

Kenya’s highways have seen a sudden surge in terrifying collisions over the past week, prompting urgent calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and enhanced safety patrols.

The Meru–Nairobi Highway remains closed in affected sections as tow trucks and emergency crews work to restore free flow of traffic. Motorists are urged to avoid the area or expect delays.
